About Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda, known as Narendra Nath Dutta before, was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata (used to be called Calcutta). He passed away on July 4, 1902. His dad was Vishwanath Dutta, and his mom was Bhuvaneshwari Devi. They were well-off.

When his dad died suddenly, their family faced money problems. Despite being a good student, he couldn’t find a job for a long time. He tried hard, going door to door, but no luck. He even stopped believing in God for a while.

In 1881, he met Shri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa at Dakshineshwar’s Kali temple and became his disciple. He introduced Indian philosophies like Vedanta and Yoga to the Western World. He loved India a lot and spoke up about the country’s poverty. He wanted to fix it for India to grow.

His famous speech in Chicago in 1893, starting with “Sisters and brothers of America…” introduced India’s culture and Hinduism.

Swami Vivekananda was wise and a true thinker. His teachings inspired not just young people but also helped India grow. That’s why January 12 is celebrated as National Youth Day in India every year with happiness and excitement.
