International Education Day History

International Education Day is a worldwide celebration emphasizing the importance of education for all, celebrated on January 24. While the day may seem like a new initiative, its journey to becoming a globally recognized event has been surprisingly long and influential.

Before 1900’s and throughout history, various individuals and organizations have championed the right to education and its important role in the well-being of individuals and society. In the 20th century, Movements such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the Education for All movement (1990s) emphasized the importance of quality education available to all and there were many attempts to announce the day as official.

However only on December 3, 2018, The United Nations General Assembly, through a resolution co-authored by Nigeria and 58 other Member States globally announced and declared as Jan 24 The first International Day of Education is celebrated around the world to recognize the power of education for sustainable development and to create a peaceful and prosperous future. We have reached an important milestone in our development.

Each year, this day focuses on a specific theme, including Inclusive, Equitable, and Quality Education (2020), Digital Learning and Education in Crisis Situations (2021), and Sustainable Development Transforming Education (2023)

International Education Day Importance
