Assam, a state in India, is divided into administrative units called districts. Each district is overseen by a Deputy Commissioner. In 2022, the Assam Cabinet made a decision to merge four new districts with existing ones, bringing the total count to 32 districts. Initially, after India gained independence, there were only 13 districts in Assam.

Districts in Assam History
When India became independent in 1947, Assam had 13 districts. After that, new districts were created from existing ones. In 1951, North Cachar Hills and United Mikir districts were formed from parts of other districts.
Later, in 1983, Sonitpur, Barpeta, Jorhat, Karimganj, Dhubri, and Kokrajhar districts were created by dividing existing districts. In 2003, Kamrup Metropolitan district was formed from Kamrup.
In 2015, Assam’s Chief Minister announced five more new districts, increasing the total to 32. Two more were announced in 2016, but the status of two existing districts changed later that year.
By August 2020, there were 34 districts in Assam, but in December 2022, four districts merged into others. Currently, there are 32 districts in the state.
