A force is a pull or push which acts on an object or a body. Some examples of force are gravitational force, frictional force, centripetal force. magnetic force etc. The force changes or tries to change the position, direction and speed of an object. Force acting on objects differently depending on the type of motion they exhibit.

Centripetal force is the force which acts towards the centre of the circular path

Centripetal force

Centripetal force – These forces are acting on the object in curvilinear motion which is directed towards the axis of rotation or centre of curvature.

The unit of centripetal force is newton.

The centripetal force is always acting in the direction perpendicular to the direction of the object’s displacement.

By using Newton’s second law of motion.

It is found that the centripetal force of an object which is moving in a circular path always acts towards the centre of the circle.

Formula of Centripetal Force

The Centripetal Force Formula is given as-

It is the product of mass (m) and the square of tangential velocity (v) divided by the radius (r) which implies that on twice the tangential velocity the centripetal force will be four times.

Mathematically it is written as-

F = mv2/r

Where

F = Centripetal force

m = mass of the object

v = speed or velocity of the object and r is the radius

Centrifugal force

Centrifugal force – It is a pseudo force in a circular motion which acts along the radius and it is directed away from the centre of the circle.

Centrifugal force does not exist when measurements are made in an Internal frame of reference.

Formula of Centrifugal Force

A centrifugal force formula is the same as centripetal force (which describes a real phenomenon) and the direction of the force is reversed, to describe the fictitious centrifugal force.
