Makar Sankranti holds great importance and significance. In India the festival honours the Sun God and marks the end of winter. People take a holy dip in rivers such as Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Krishna and Godavari to express reverence toward the Sun God.
It is believed that the ritual dip cleanses people of their sins and get Moksha, release from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

But this year, in 2024, Makar Sankranti falls on Monday, January 15, and it does always during leap years (in 2020 leap year, Makar Sankranti was held on Wed, Jan 15). The reason behind is – the famous Hindu calendar, Drik Panchang, foretells about a sacred period that extends 10 hours and 31 minutes – from 7:15 AM to 5:46 PM on January 15, 2024.
